Charlie Strong will take the job and he would be the best fit for the job!

As a former player at Richmond while Londond was an assistant, and as a huge supporter of our program, I must reluctantly say that Mike London is the man for the job. I would hate to see him leave Richmond, he has done so much to re-instill pride in the program. But he deserves it. Let the facts speak for themeselves.

I think UVA should bring a coach from the SEC to the ACC. If they want to bring the Cavs to big time football, what better conference to steal talent from. Just look at what "mediocre" SEC teams did to the top 2 ACC teams this past weekend.

IMHO Bud Foster would rather cut his arm off than coach at UVA.
A great coach can be had for a fair price. The bigger problem is the high standards that UVA has in bringing good players here. You need to have a 3.4 junior college GPA or 1250 minimum SAT score just to get in the door. What that means is that the very best football players would not be allowed to play here.
Personally, I don't see it as a problem because I like the fact that this is one of the best universities in the country academically. However, the casual fan needs to understand and accept that fact.

I would go for Chris Petersen if UVA can get him. Regarding previous UVA connected coaches (ie London, Golden)...I think it's time to start fresh for a full recovery!

Sent to me from a friend in Hunnington...
University of Virginia Athletic Director Craig Littlepage is on a hot seat. The Cavalier program may have lost a bit of its luster, but, other than Notre Dame, Virginia is the most attractive job opening this offseason. Fair or not the pressure will be on Littlepage to come through in the clutch here. If not he will lose what is left of the support from fans and more importantly the boosters.
The candidates…
Tommy Tuberville is a well respected coach with an impressive track record for success. He has navigated the tough SEC waters and with the mediocrity in the ACC, he could help stage a quick turnaround for the Cavaliers. But most importantly, he brings instant name recognition to the troubled program. Tuberville would improve the Virginia football brand nationally; opening up more recruiting lines, and would instantly put bodies in Scott Stadium. He has made no secret that he covets the job in Charlottesville.
In his first year as head coach of Boise State Chris Petersen served notice that he was the real McCoy by beating Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Since then the Broncos have been the most dominant non-BCS school in the nation. Petersen is young, energetic and hard as nails. He is a real community guy and, like Tuberville would bring instant credibility to UVA. The down side is that he and his family love Boise. Usually that wouldn’t be a big issue, but Petersen is a throw back to a different era and has very different priorities. The plus for UVA is that Charlottesville is much like Boise as far as being a family friendly place with small town values and attitudes. If the Cavaliers could boost his salary to something like $1.6 million he would likely be the Cavaliers new coach. If this does happen, Craig Littlepage would be a hero.
Skip Holtz got his start at Notre Dame where he was named Offensive Coordinator by his father, even though he probably hadn’t earned the position (sound familiar Virginia?). But, Holtz has certainly earned everything since. He has built off of his Notre Dame and South Carolina coaching experience, and has built a very successful and sound program at East Carolina. He knows the game, has good ties to the fertile Virginia/North Carolina/ Tennessee recruiting grounds and has the name recognition [due to his father] that UVA needs. No one is certain he would leave ECU, as he has turned down other offers, but if the Cavaliers go after him in a serious manner he probably would relocate to Charlottesville. Hiring Holtz would be seen as a real coup for the Hoos. He’s young, aggressive, and loyal and really knows the game. In addition he already has ties to both UVA and the ACC. He’s a proven talent and the safest choice.
Louisiana Tech’s Derek Dooley was a standout wide receiver for the Cavaliers from 1987-1990. He walked onto the team before eventually earning a scholarship and helped lead Virginia to the 1989 ACC title which makes him somewhat of a Hoo hero. He recently led the Bulldogs to their first bowl win in more than 30 years as they topped Northern Illinois in the 2008 Independence Bowl. Young, talented and extremely smart, Dooley seems to fit a certain mold of the up and coming successful coach that UVA has been know to go after for other sports openings. While 2009 has been challenging, he has built a rock-solid program at Louisiana Tech and is a players coach. Not a flashy big name pick, he would be a nice get for Virginia.
A big splash [from a PR standpoint] Mike London is a good fall back for UVA. The second year Richmond head coach is already known and beloved by the folks at Virginia. He is a former Cavalier defensive coordinator and has found a great deal of success as head coach of the Spiders. He helped lead the team to their first national championship in any sport and knocked off an ACC foe (Duke) earlier this season in a win that Duke makes look better by the week. While he has overseen an amazing team turnaround, it is important to note that he inherited most of his current players and all of his stars. The question remains, how well can he build a team for sustained success? In the past he has had strong recruiting ties in-state, but his recruiting in Richmond thus far has been disappointing with no real impact players to speak of. London is a very likeable guy who would bring a youthful fire that could energize a fan base. However, with his limited years of head coaching experience and so much at stake, Virginia fans simply cannot be sure whether he is ready for an opportunity to coach in a BCS conference. If the Cavaliers can’t land one of their big name dream coaches, London will almost certainly be the next head man in Charlottesville.
Also mentioned, but not believed to be serious candidates…
Temple coach Al Golden Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong Harvard coach Tim Murphy Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster North Carolina State coach Tom O'Brien
Not happening…
Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly TCU coach Gary Patterson Kansas coach Mark Mangino James Madison coach Mickey Matthews Buffalo coach Turner Gill
